Rumor has it that there is other news in the world besides Michael Jackson’s death. I’m not sure I believe it myself. You certainly wouldn’t know it from television. It’s been all Michael all the time for over a week. Can’t we just bury the pervert guy and move on? All the hyperbole surrounding his death has made me laugh out loud a lot. (The proper geek term is ROTFL) Just for the record, he is NOT the greatest entertainer of all time, or even the century, or even the last 20 years. Maybe of the early 80′s, but that’s it. In fact, if it wasn’t for his eccentric lifestyle, or the many scandals surrounding him, the networks would have been doing “What ever happened to…” stories. So in case you don’t get my feelings about MJ, back in the 80′s, with a LOT of help from music producer Quincy Jones, director John Landis, and choreographer Michael Peters, MJ had a string of popular hit songs that fit the times very well. But he has been musically irrelevant since then, and would be long forgotten without his many scandals. He is most certainly not deserving of the sainthood being bestowed upon him!
Whew… got that off my chest. All I can say is thank god for cable. Thanks to Bravo, HGTV, and TCM I’ve managed to avoid most of the MJ hysteria. Oh, let’s not forget the Discovery channel. One of my favorite shows for the past few years has been ‘Deadliest Catch‘, now in it’s 5th season. If you’ve ever heard those stories about Alaska fisherman making $50k for only one season of fishing, this show will give you the reality of it. Then there is Kathy Griffin on Bravo TV’s ‘My Life on the D-List‘ with Kathy. Admittedly, Kathy is not everybody’s cup-of-tea, but I think she is funny as hell, and her mother… well, let’s just say she has a passing resemblance to someone close to me. (Is it 5 o’clock already, Irene?) Then there is HGTV. I like their show ‘House Hunters‘. After watching it for a couple of years, it reflects the housing market in various areas of the country. It is also interesting to see what people are looking for in housing. They also have an International version that is pretty interesting.
So, that’s how I’ve kept my sanity for the last several days. Hopefully now that he is in the ground life will move on.
